Course Goals
- The course aims to achieve the following goals:
- Helping learners to achieve an overall English language proficiency,
- Developing social language functions such as handling very short social exchanges,
- Using simple, everyday polite forms of greeting and address,
- Making and responding to invitations, suggestions, and apologies.
- Read and understand simple texts and a range of high frequency vocabulary in context. (READING)
- Follow short spoken texts on familiar topics in which speech is slowly and carefully articulated. (LISTENING COMPREHENSION)
- Communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar matters. (SPEAKING)
- Write simple cohesive paragraphs on familiar topics using appropriate vocabulary. (WRITING)
- Demonstrate some control of everyday high frequency vocabulary and essential grammatical structures allowing for occasional inconsistencies. (USE OF ENGLISH)
Key Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the students will be able to:
Speaking
- Describe plans and arrangements, habits and routines, past events,   activities and personal experiences
- Describe his/her family, living conditions, educational background, present or most recent job, people, places, and possessions
- Participate in short conversations in routine contexts on topics of interest and say what he/she likes
- Communicate in simple and routine tasks using simple phrases to ask for and provide things, to get simple information and to discuss what to do next
- Â Ask and answer questions about himself/herself, habits and routines, past activities
Listening
- Understand phrases and expressions related to areas of most immediate priority enough to be able to meet needs of a concrete everyday type provided speech is clearly and slowly articulated
- Generally, identify the topic of discussion around him/her, when it is conducted slowly and clearly
- Understand and extract the essential information from short, recorded passages dealing with predictable everyday matters which are delivered slowly and clearly
Reading
- Understand short, simple texts on familiar matters of a concrete type which consist of high frequency every day or job-related language
- Find specific, predictable information in simple every day written material such as advertisements, prospectuses, menus, reference lists, timetables, letters, brochures and short newspaper articles describing events
Writing
- Write very short, basic descriptions of events, past activities and personal experiences
- Write very short, basic descriptions of their family, living conditions, educational background, present or most recent job events
- Use of English Grammar and Vocabulary
- Use a range of vocabulary to describe natural and man-made places, homes and furniture, food and beverages, jobs, study subjects, personalities, and famous sights
- Use a range of grammar, including countable and uncountable nouns, present progressive for future arrangements, articles, advice with if, present perfect, and verbs ‘be going to’, ‘be hoping to’ and ‘would like to’ for future hopes, plans and wishes

Assessment
Student performance will be based on examinations in comprehension and usage, writing, speaking and continuous assessment. Continuous assessment includes home and in-class portfolio assignments ranging from extended writing tasks to weekly reflection given each weeks.
Mid-Course Examination:
Content: Comprehension/Usage/Vocabulary
Format: MCQs
Frequency: One mid-course exam
Time: 60 minutes
Writing Examinations:
Content: Punctuation and sentence construction, including questions and statements
Format: 20 questions to be answered in complete sentences ; second assessment includes a guided writing task
Frequency: Two writing examinations
Time: 30 minutes
Speaking Examinations:
Content: High frequency and common sentence structures
Format: Short Interview format; with five high frequency questions and questions common to course material followed by a picture description task
Frequency: Two speaking examinations
Time: Approximately 3 minutes
Continuous Assessment:
Content: A variety of portfolio assignments that cover the following:
      Extended writing tasks
      Workbook and home assignments
      Grammar & vocabulary quizzes
      Reading comprehension tasks& Weekly reflections
Format: Worksheets divided into weekly sections and compiled in a folder
